Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (1630–1680)

Role: Founder of the Maratha Empire.

Contributions: Established a competent and progressive administration, promoted the welfare of his people, and built a strong navy. He is revered for his military tactics and his resistance against the Mughal Empire.

Shivaji began his military career with the capture of Torna Fort in 1645. Over the next decades, he expanded his territory through a series of successful campaigns against the Deccan Sultanates and the Mughals.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856-1920)

Role: Nationalist leader, scholar, and social reformer.

Contributions: Known as "Lokmanya Tilak," he was one of the first leaders of the Indian independence movement. He founded the Deccan Education Society and popularized the Ganapati festival and Shivaji Jayanti to instill a sense of nationalism.

His famous declaration, "Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it," became a rallying cry for the movement. Tilak also authored the influential book "Gita Rahasya," interpreting the Bhagavad Gita as a call to action for freedom.

Role: Senior leader of the Indian National Congress, social reformer, mentor to Mahatma Gandhi.

Contributions: Gokhale was a moderate nationalist who believed in achieving self-rule through constitutional means. He founded the Servants of India Society to train Indians to dedicate their lives to the nation's cause.

He played a significant role in the Indian legislative councils and advocated for social reforms, including education, women's rights, and the upliftment of the underprivileged. His mentorship significantly influenced Mahatma Gandhi’s approach to the freedom movement.
