Location and Overview

Purandar Fort is situated near the town of Purandar in the Pune district, approximately 50 kilometers from Pune. The fort is located at an elevation of 1,350 meters above sea level and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Western Ghats.

 

Historical Significance

Purandar Fort is historically significant as it was the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s successor, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The fort was a key military stronghold during the Maratha Empire and played a role in various historical events, including battles against the Mughals.

 

Architectural Features

The fort features several important structures, including the Balekilla (main citadel), the Purandar Temple, and various water tanks and bastions. The fort’s design includes massive walls and defensive features, which provided protection against enemy invasions.

 

Accessing Purandar Fort

The fort is accessible by road from Pune. Visitors can drive to the base of the fort and then trek to the top. The trek is relatively easy and suitable for all age groups. The fort is well-connected and does not require extensive trekking.

 

Visiting Hours

Purandar Fort is open to visitors from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the winter months (November to February) when the weather is pleasant and suitable for exploration.
