Location and Overview

Torna Fort, also known as Prachandgad, is located in the Pune district, about 50 kilometers southwest of Pune. The fort stands at an elevation of 1,403 meters, making it one of the highest forts in Maharashtra. Torna is known for its challenging trek and stunning views of the Sahyadri range.

 

Historical Significance

Torna Fort was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1643, at the young age of 16. This marked the beginning of the Maratha Empire. The fort was later expanded and fortified, becoming a key stronghold in the Maratha Empire.

 

Architectural Features

The fort is spread over a large area and features several key structures, including the Menghai Devi Temple, Zunjar Machi, and Budhla Machi. The fort's fortifications are massive and provide an insight into the strategic importance of the fort.

 

Accessing Torna Fort

The trek to Torna Fort begins from the base village of Velhe. The trek is considered difficult due to its steep and rocky terrain, but it is a favorite among seasoned trekkers. The fort can also be reached via a longer route from Rajgad Fort, making for a challenging trek.

 

Visiting Hours

Torna Fort is open to visitors from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the winter season (November to February) or just after the monsoon, when the weather is cooler and the landscape is lush.
