Visapur Fort is located near Lohagad Fort in the Pune district, standing at an elevation of 1,084 meters above sea level. The fort is known for its expansive plateau and panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the nearby Lohagad Fort. It is a significant fort in the Maratha Empire’s defense strategy.

 

Historical Significance

Visapur Fort was built during the early 18th century by the Marathas and played a crucial role in strengthening their control over the region. The fort’s strategic location and design were intended to complement the defenses of the neighboring Lohagad Fort.

 

Architectural Features

The fort is spread over a large area and features massive stone walls, bastions, and gateways. It has several old structures, including water tanks, caves, and temples. The well-preserved fortification surrounding the plateau is one of its most impressive features.

 

Accessing Visapur Fort

The trek to Visapur Fort starts from the base village of Bhaje or Malavli. The trek is moderately difficult and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The monsoon season enhances the beauty of the fort, with waterfalls and streams flowing through the region.

 

Visiting Hours

Visapur Fort is open to visitors from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the monsoon season (June to September), when the fort is enveloped in greenery, or during the winter months for a more comfortable trekking experience.
